Gulf of Aden group transit dogged by confusion
Friday 01 May, 2009
Confusion remains over the way the group transit system through the Gulf of Aden works, according to Stephen Askins of Ince & Co, writes Sandra Speares.
While many operators have registered with the Maritime Security Centre (Horn of Africa) based in Northwood, near London, they do not notify the UK Maritime Trade Operations centre in Dubai prior to transit.
Mr Askins warned that ships that failed to register with UK MTO might find themselves unprotected in the event of a pirate attack. Owners who failed to take adequate precautions, including registration with UK MTO, could find themselves facing an unseaworthiness claim, Mr Askins said. There could be an impact on crew claims and warranties requiring an undertaking by owners to register. Gulf of Aden Group Transit dogged by Confusion - Article (pdf)
