Somali piracy - BMP4 launched
Tuesday 30 August, 2011

Best Management Practices for Protection against Somalia Based Piracy version 4 (BMP4) has recently been published. This replaces BMP3 reflecting the experiences of the industry over the past 12 months.

The purpose of BMP4 is to “assist ships to avoid, deter or delay piracy attacks in the High Risk Area”. Adopting BMP guidelines remains the best preparation against piracy for vessels traversing the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean. BMP4 builds on the previous guidelines offering more detailed guidance pre and post attack but it now reflects the reality that many ships operators are using armed guards. BMP4 makes it clear that where any guards are deployed they must not be an alternative to BMP but an additional layer of defence.
