The Maritime Labour Convention 2006
Wednesday 19 January, 2011
Ince & Co London partner and Superyacht UK Committee member Albert Levy recently attended the Superyacht UK Technical Seminar at the Tullett Prebon London Boat Show. The seminar focussed on the implementation of the Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (MLC) and the effect this will have with regards to crew accommodation in yachts. Careful consideration will also be required when undertaking a refit, as any "substantial" refit to the crew accommodation may require it to comply with MLC standards.
The full text of the MLC 2006 can be found by clicking this link.
Part of the conference dealt with the approach of the Maritime & Coastguard Agency who have made significant proposals which, if implemented, will provide important support for the Red Ensign and those who work in the commercial yacht sector.
The real and probably more important issue for existing and future yacht owners and managers may be the ongoing social requirements, particularly where a multi-national crew is employed.
