Following a law degree and a postgraduate Diploma in International Law, Denys qualified as a barrister. He received a practical Training Award, was awarded the Goldie Scholarship and was the winner of the Band Trust Practical Scholarship at Gray’s Inn.

Denys then re-qualified as a solicitor, joined Ince & Co, and was made a partner in 1986.

Denys has recently been appointed as a member of the SIAC Panel of Arbitrators and is on the Emergency Arbitrator Panel in Singapore. He has also been appointed to the SCMA Panel, and is on the SCMA Committee. He is also on the Board of Maxwell Chambers, which provides a state of the art venue in Singapore for arbitration and mediation.

Denys is the Head of the Energy & Offshore Group Asia Pacific Region. He has a strong reputation for arbitration and dispute resolution work, and is very well known for oil and gas, metal and other commodity trading work. 

In the Energy & Offshore sector, his upstream oil and gas work has included advising on FPSO agreements, Supplytime charters and LNG vessel charters. He has also advised on various aspects of offshore construction joint ventures, the financing of refinery projects, disputes relating to offshore oil and gas projects, oilfield re-determination problems and pipeline construction disputes. Denys has recently been appointed to the Singapore Shipowners Association (SSA) Offshore Services Committee.

In the oil and gas insurance field, he has advised on CAR insurance, disputes arising out of the loss of offshore wells and oil and gas insurance claims.

Denys has also advised on the application of EU and UK competition law to energy and offshore activities, including joint selling arrangements and offshore contracting joint ventures.

Denys has extensive experience of oil and gas trading, and has acted for a number of National oil companies and for several of the biggest independent traders. He has been involved in drafting long term supply and offtake agreements, and has advised on trading disputes, the carriage of oil and gas and on shortage and contamination claims.

His trading experience also involve metals and soft commodities, subject to LME, GAFTA and FOSFA arbitration.

Denys also has substantial experience of trade finance, swaps and derivatives, and both OTC and exchange traded freight futures.

He has extensive shipping experience, particularly in relation to oil and gas trading and transport including LNG. His expertise covers charterparties, carriage of goods and bills of lading.

He has also advised on the application of EU and UK competition law to shipping and oil trading, as well as on anti-dumping and WTO matters.

Denys has extensive experience in international litigation and arbitration. His arbitration experience, gained over the last 30 years, includes ad hoc arbitrations and arbitrations under ICC, LCIA, UNCITRAL, and LMAA rules. Denys has sat as an arbitrator, and is a Member of the Institute of Arbitrators and a member of the Arbitration Club - Oil & Gas Branch. Denys has also conducted a large number of successful mediations, and has acted as a mediator.

In addition, he has considerable litigation experience covering the entire spectrum of his practice areas. This includes multi-jurisdictional fraud and asset seizure cases in many jurisdictions. In this connection he has been appointed by the High Court as a Supervising Solicitor on the execution of Search Orders.
