Following time at sea, Eckehard studied law at the universities of Kiel, Strassburg and Stellenbosch. He obtained a Master's Degree in Mercantile Law from Stellenbosch University and submitted his doctoral thesis in International Trade Law. During his legal training, Eckehard spent considerable time in South Africa, United Kingdom (London), Belgium and France. He speaks German, English and French.

Eckehard has been working as a German lawyer ("Rechtsanwalt") since 2005. He joined Ince & Co in 2007.

Eckehard acts for shipyards, shipowners, shipping companies, charterers, P&I clubs and hull underwriters in all aspects of shipping law.

With his seagoing background and nautical experience, Eckehard is well placed to advise on all aspects of Admiralty Law, P&I and Marine Insurance. He has extensive experience of handling Admiralty matters and has been involved in a number of major casualties, including collisions, groundings and salvage cases. His experience includes negotiating, litigating and arbitrating cargo claims, charterparty disputes and ship arrests. 

Eckehard acts for operators, insurers, suppliers and major energy industry contractors, in both the onshore and offshore sectors. He advises on the drafting, and negotiation of contracts, including construction and engineering projects, as well as charterparties.

Recent experience includes:

  • advising owners on the charter party for an offshore installation vessel (to be employed offshore German coast);
  • drafting and advising on the terms of an agreement for engineering, loading, transport and crane operations of WTG for an offshore wind farm;
  • advising an insurer on claims for loss/damage to an oil pipeline.

In addition to his expertise in shipping matters Eckehard handles marine insurance cases. He acts for both owners, underwriters and Clubs particularly on coverage issues arising out of major maritime accidents and related P&I claims.
