Jonathan has direct commercial experience in the maritime industry and in the related fields of energy, insurance, aviation and international trade and commerce. He heads Ince & Co's logistics group.

His experience has led him to champion the use of ADR and arbitration in these sectors, to enable people quickly and cost-effectively to put disputes behind them and get on with their business.

He was instrumental in setting up and then served for two years as senior partner of the Hamburg office of Ince & Co, returning to London in 2004.

Jonathan is the Honorary Consul of Cape Verde in London.

In July 2010 Jonathan was named "Global Shipping & Maritime Lawyer of the Year 2010" at the Who's Who Legal Awards. Jonathan was also named "Shipping & Maritime Lawyer of the Year" at the Who's Who Legal Awards: Practice Area Awards 2011.

The Lloyd’s List Top 100 2011 (a review of the most influential people in shipping) has ranked Jonathan number six in its Top Ten Law Personalities.

Jonathan is a leading expert in shipping and commercial law with particular expertise in bunkers and is co-author of the only legal text-book on bunkers - Fisher & Lux on "Bunkers" (now in its third edition). He advises the major P&I Clubs, their shipowner and charterer members, and major insurers.

Jonathan is a Council Member of the International Bunker Industry Association and former co-ordinator of its working group on dispute resolutions, and a Director of the London Shipping Law Centre. He has been listed in Chambers Global Directory and Who’s Who Legal 2009 as a leading international shipping lawyer in London.

Jonathan acts for oil industry interests including major offshore construction, drilling and other oilfield services contractors in support of their worldwide services.

He advises on the construction, employment and operation of offshore drilling units and production platforms. His experience in advising on maritime issues has led to the development of his practice in offshore energy as well as renewables. He also advises clients on preparation, drafting and negotiation of contracts for offshore structures and support vessels, including the construction and charter of FPSOs and pipelaying vessels. 

His expertise extends to the operation and leasing of assets utilised by the offshore oil and gas industry, on claims under marine and energy insurance policies, and on disputes arising from all of the foregoing. 

A pioneer in the introduction of ADR into his fields of practice, Jonathan is also a practising arbitrator and Fellow of the Institute of Arbitrators.

He is an accredited mediator who has conducted numerous mediations over many years achieving an enviable success rate and has participated in Court mediation schemes. He has also lectured widely and written numerous articles on the subject of mediation and is co-author of ADR and Commercial Disputes (Sweet & Maxwell, 2003).
