WHAT WE DO / SHIPPING / POLLUTION
Ince & Co is recognised for its unrivalled experience and expertise in the specialist field of marine pollution. The firm acted for the owners and insurers of Torrey Canyon, in the world’s first major oil spill in 1967. Since then we have acted on instructions from shipowners and their liability insurers in most of the major pollution incidents of international significance, including the Prestige oil spill off Spain and the Hebei Spirit spill off South Korea.
We regularly advise on accidental bunker spills and contamination, ship recycling, environmental damage and wreck removal issues.
Ince is not only pre-eminent in helping owners respond to oil spills but is routinely consulted by clients affected by the subject in various branches of maritime commerce. We have also been closely involved, through the CMI, IMO and other organisations, in the development of new international laws which have often followed in the wake of the landmark cases.
With a worldwide reputation in this field, the firm is regularly instructed by leading representative bodies in the shipping, insurance and oil industries. Among other work of this kind we have acted for a coalition of shipping industry organisations challenging the validity of EU legislation on criminal liability for ship-source pollution.
We advise the International Group of P&I Clubs on pollution matters and for many years have acted for the oil industry funded CRISTAL scheme.
Our international emergency response team is available 24 hours a day to assist clients on all aspects of marine pollution incidents.
