WORK AT INCE / BUSINESS SERVICES / BILLING
Neil Cant, Billing Clerk
I joined the firm at 16 as an accounts junior. That was ten years ago and I’ve never looked back. I’ve had about three or four roles in the accounts team, taking me from general support to accounts payable, and on to my current position in the billing department.
I look after half the partnership, making sure they issue bills to clients, and checking that the bills are correct and going to the right people. To make sure it all gets done correctly and on time, I have a monthly meeting with 28 partners. It’s a challenging job but very rewarding.
In my job, good communication skills are essential. I supervise three members of staff and it’s important to be able to get on with all kinds of people. Fortunately, the working environment is very open; everyone is part of the team and there’s no sense of hierarchy.
There are plenty of social opportunities. Our annual golf day is coming up. As a keen golfer, it’s my chance to show off to the partners. Whether you’re accounts staff, catering staff or a partner, everyone is welcome to get involved. And the social events are great, such as the balls in May and at Christmas.
Based on my own experience, if you’ve got a good attitude and you’re willing to learn and progress, then the firm will give you as much help as you need. My career is still developing – the firm has supported me through several courses, from supervisory skills to presentations. And although I haven’t done it yet, I know the support is there if I decide to take a more formal exam. I’m considering taking an Institute of Credit Management course, but if I choose not to take it, it’s not a problem. Everyone is encouraged to develop in their own way.
